Currently Developers make contributions towards local infrastructure through a mechanism called “Section 106 Contributions”. Early next year this is changing to a new mechanism called ‘CIL’ – Community Infrastructure Levy, which is a rate per square metre of the new building.
EHDC is now consulting on this and copies of relevant documents are linked below.
There are exemptions, for example self build, residential extensions etc. CIL is intended to ensure the organisation profiting from the development or building, especially on larger scale schemes, makes the improvements needed to the surrounding infrastructure and not the existing community or tax payer.
