Here we have a great old photo of Downs Ward from may years ago. I would guess that there are 40 homes in the picture compared to the 1,200 we now have.
I wonder what residents thought about development a century ago… If you have any clues to help date the picture, or can identify your own house in the image, then please let me know.
I will award a bottle of wine to the best ‘modern day’ photograph of the same aspect.
Just no trespassing please! Closing date, Christmas Eve. You should be able to save the picture by right clicking on the image.
Many thanks to Cllr Sara Schillemore from Catherington Ward for the photo.
This would have been taken in about 1930; at the same time as some of he other local Catherington scenes some of which were made into postcards which used to be sold in the three Catherington Shops, two in Wrexham Grove (the Post Office and a Newsagents) and one in White Dirt Lane (called the Queensferry Stores which was a general store) near the junction with Catherington Hill. There were now Planning Law restrictions in those days, now I think until 1944. I think the old Pinhorn’s Farm was demolished and replaced by a bungalow in the 1950s. No doubt Catherington Camera Club will provide a ‘modern’ picture of the same scene!
